When Heike Konterman crossed the finish line at 04:23 Sunday morning, two teams were still headed toward Alta. But during the day it became evident that neither Jan Vidar Dahle nor Leif Herleiksplass would make it to the finish line. Konterman, who is from Germany but represents Sweden, then ended up being the last musher to finish FL-1000 in 2016.

– I did not want to be the last one to cross the finish line, and when I left Karasjok there were several teams behind me, she said. Despite this, she is happy and proud to have completed the race, having traveled 1000 km across Finnmark.

Nice prizes

Due to the late scratch-times of the teams behind her, it was impossible to know that Heike would be the “last woman standing.” Therefore she was not given the type of welcome the Finnmark Race normally gives the last musher who finishes. The prizes – a dog house given by Aksis and a Sami knife given by Sparebank1 Nord-Norge, Heike got Sunday afternoon.
