Lars Monsen was the first musher to leave cp Kirkenes on Tuesday, but did not keep his lead for long. After a short while he stopped to let the dogs rest, but after a while he moved on to cp Neiden2. In the morning hours the national wildlife celebrity admits that he struggles with his dogs.

- I can't quite figure it out and have had to drop one dog after the other, he says with a hint of frustration.

Monsen thinks that the warm weather that has been in the eastern parts of Finnmark county for the past few days might be partly to blame. - I have to stop all the time to let the dogs drink, and the race does not go according to plan.

His goal for this race is now changed.

- My goal now is to give the youngest and most promising leaders in my dog team a good experience, he says.
