In Mathisdalen in Alta a scene for dog racing has developed, with many good mushers and dog teams. At this moment the youngest musher in FL-500 this year, Espen Sønvisen Bech (18) is heading up the Tana River with only 4 teams in front of him and eight dogs still running. Earlier this winter he did well in Femundløpet, so the fast pace should come as no surprise. When we look at who is in front of him and not to mention who is behind him (Sølvi Monsen (49), Elisabeth Edland (54), Ole Wingren(61)) this is impressive. The youngster is doing well.

His handler Nina Vollen tells us Espen is aggressive, constantly wanting information about who is in front and behind him. He is optimistic considering the rest of the race.  The dogs were eating and resting well in Levajok so the competitors should be on the watch for this up and comer.

One of the reasons for the good results can be good dogs. His father (Petter Bech) is a farmer and is competent in breeding and choosing individuals. He himself says he has caught a severe case of dog racing obsession, so powerful that now everything is revolved around dog racing. It will be thrilling to follow the continuance.
