Every single one of the 136 mushers have a GPS tracker attached to their sleigh as they lift anchor in Alta. 71 of them follow the FL-500, the rest continue towards Kirkenes with the FL-1000 teams.

The GPS trackers are usually updated every 15minutes, but when the mushers reach the most desolated plains, update intervals may vary. The GPS trackers only work to pin-point the positions of the dog teams, and the mushers have to use their own GPS devices to navigate the trail. When reading the tracking-map we recommend noticing the time of the last GPS update. Often the positions of the mushers can vary because of different update times.

The mushers are registered by the position of their sleigh, and when they stop at the checkpoints they also stop moving on the tracking map. To get a good overview at the checkpoints we recommend looking at the result service.
