Alta municipality is aware of the significance of Finnmarksløpet to the municipality and to the region. The municipality will do its part of ensuring that the sport of dog sled racing is able to develop. Alta is probably the only part of Norway that wishes to designate plots for homebuilding especially suitable for dog mushers in the zoning plan. It is recognized that Finnmarksløpet has given dog sled racing a special standing in the community, with positive effects on business and the quality of life. In the zoning plan no other sports are given an equal status when it comes to plots for building homes.

The department of planning is now working on how to incorporate plots suitable for mushers that want to build homes. The plots will have to be larger than normal plots, and need access to areas where they can train the dogs without transporting them first. Other conditions, like the possibility of noise, also have to be considered.
Equally important, other people seeking plots in these areas will have to be aware that they could get a lot of dogs as neighbours.
