Even longer, but possibly easier

Today we have been informed about the change in the track between Sirma and Levajok 2. After the distance has been tracked with GPS it came to 73 kilometers. The old track was 55 kilometers. This gives a new track that is 18 kilometers longer.

There are two reasons for this change. Firstly we chose to move the trail away from the Tana river because of difficult ice conditions the last few years, so this is due to safety. The new trail that was intended also had to be altered because of the reindeer husbandry in the area and their problem with mixed herds.

Underneath you can see a new overview map. You now go straight to the northwest from Sirma until you hit the trail that goes between Levajok 1 and Tana bru.

Easier from Levajok to Tana bru

Even though it is obvious that the leg from Sirma to Levajok 2 will be harder, the total might be improved due to the new trail between Levajok and Tana bru. Here you will now climb 300 meters, as oppose to 500 before. There are also fewer valleys to cross. Our man responsible for the track in the area Krister Höök believes this will make the track quite a bit easier.

Nevertheless, Finnmarksløpet is now a little longer, and it might be wise to take an extra look at the race plan.
