For the first time a prize for the best handler is given durng Finnmarksløpet. Students at Finnmark College will give the prize to the handler who best fulfils the following: Takes the job seriously, cooperative and creates a good atmosphere.

The prize is a traditional Sami belt and knife, as well as a silver button. Traditionally the Sami people would bring silver when traveling to keep spirits from the underworld at bay. The knife is a good tool to help you stay alive, and the leather belt helps you to stand strong. These are all qualities you look for in a good handler.

Teacher Aleksander Hansen and student Mats Hoel Johannessen are looking forward to
Finnmarksløpet. The students have been preparing for a long time. Friday they leave for
Levajok where a week of dogs and mushers will fill their days.   Photo: Inger Elin Utsi
