FL 1000: Who keeps the highest speed on tha trails?

The start-times in the 1000 km race will not be evened out until after all mushers have done the obligatory 16 hours rest. The fact that the start-times are evened out means that the musher who started last gets the least time added to the total race-time, while the one who started first gets the most time added to their rest-time. It is only after this change of the times that the musher who is first on the tracks is the one who really leads the race.

Therefore it is very intereseting to see who has the fastest team, so far. Harald Tunheim had a total race-time of 13:11 when he left Levajok, and had rested only 4 hours and 24 minutes.
To compare, Kjetil Reitan who left as number 18 from Levajok had the fastest team with a total race-time of 12 hours and 42 minutes. Still, Reitan has rested for a total of 9 hours and 16 minutes.
The differences in race-times between these two mushers illustrate the dogs' ability to restore energy while resting. In fact, the quick restore is one of the great advantages that the alaskan huskies have got. It is really the planning of race and rest-times that decides who wins the race in the end.
