Marcos Porcires (28)will participate in the Finnmarkløpet - 1000 km race for the first time. His danish girlfriend, Tina Dahl, participated last year and ranked the 8th place in the 500 km race. Marcos participated for the first time in the Finnmarksløpet - 500 km race in the year 2002, where he ranked as 7th.

As the couple they "only" have 14 dogs at home in Tromsø, which means that they cannot participate at the same time in Finnmarksløpet. As such, they divide their years of participation.

- It is fantastic for nature lovers and those who need good dog sled training area to live here, says Marcos, who is from Sweden, but fell in love with the arctic lifestyle.

Ice and snow all year round

Marcos Porcires is from Gøteborg, and became fascinated with the arctic when he first visited Svalbard five years ago. There, he also met his girlfriend. He currently lives in the "polar" town Tromsø. He can not think of a better area to live in, which is covered with ice and snow most of the year. Therefore, it is not strange that he works with ice. He is an employee at the meterological institute in Tromsø, in the ice service department.

- At this moment, the area from Greenland to Iceland, and the area to Russia is loaded with ice, he says with enthusiasm. The ice area is huge for those who work within the ice department and have to fly now and then over it to check its conditions.

No ambitions to win the race

- The Finnmarksløpet race also covers big areas, and to participate is in itself is an adventure, he says.

He looks forward to participate, but with only 14 competitive dogs, the ambitions for the 28 year old Marcos are not very high. The goal is to reach the finish line, he says modestly and elevates his 9 year old dog Zorro as his best and most experienced dog.
