People had come up to the main street in Alta to see the start that took place before dinner. There are 107 mushers from 11 countries this year and 38 of them participate in 1000 km musher races with 14 dogs over the mountain plateau, while 69 of them try half the distance with 8 dogs.
It's really exciting on the way to Alta river at the moment. 18 km up from Alta, in Sorrisniva, is the location of the restart for the teams with 14 dogs, while those with 8 dogs continue driving directly to Jotka which is the first checkpoint. After that the participants will race over the mountain to Skoganvarre. According to the trail maintenance team the weather conditions in the mountains is fantastic with sun, temperature around zero and nearly no wind.
