It is with great pleasure Finnmarksløpet has received news from the Norwegian Sled Dog Federation that this years’ race will be the 2006 Norwegian Championship in long distance racing for teams with 8 dogs. This means that last years’ 3rd prize winnder, Jan Øystein Dervo (photo) and the other participants in the 500 km race will be competing for Championship medals!

- To stand on top of the winner’s rostrum in a Norwegian Championship is big for a musher. Such a status helps raise attention around the race when it comes to participants, media, audience, supporters and partners, says leader of Alta Sled Dog Club Jan Gunnar Vian. He adds that the status as a Championship race is always positive when arranging a competition.

Alta Sled Dog Club in cooperation with all the volunteers in Sør-Varanger Sled Dog Club as well as people in Tana, Porsanger, Nesseby and Karasjok are working hard before and during the race, and it is very motivating that the competition also is the Norwegian Championship.

Finnmarksløpet is an international competition making it a so-called open Norwegian Championship. It means that in the 8-dog competition all mushers are competing for victory in Finnmarksløpet. In addition all the Norwegian mushers are competing to become the Norwegian Champion. Finnmarksløpet has long experience arranging this type of race and this element adds to the excitement of the competition.
